Movie

#5 Beverly Hills Cop – These films, Beverly Hills Cop 1, 2, and 3, have action packed scenes that the entire family will love. The main character, Axel Foley, is played by none other than the great comedian Eddie Murphy. The quick humor and suspenseful moments will have you on the edge of you seat laughing. The storyline follows Axel as a Detroit Cop who is trying to get justice and revenge for his fallen friends. This movie also has hilarious cameos by Paul Reiser, Branson Pinchot, and Damon Wayans.

#4 Raging Bull – This classic is a must watch if you are a cinema arts student or hobbyist. A Martin Scorsese picture, it plays mind games with you and allows you to sink into the film. Starring Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, this movie is about a boxer named Jake La Motta. He goes through the system to earn a title but then falls off the wagon and learns how money and fame can change a person. The black and white theme actually widens the spectrum of the cinematic views you can achieve in a film. If you are a Robert DeNiro fan, this is a must watch.

#3 Pan's Labyrinth – This film is another great cinematic beauty. It uses colors to achieve much more emotion from the audience then most films seem to achieve. It was filmed in Spanish and has beautiful English Subs added to the film for viewing pleasure. Do not let this stop you from watching the film. This fantasy trip will have you crying then rejoicing the entire time. Many critics say that this movie is up there with the lord of the rings trilogy.

#2 Stand By MeStand By Me is a family movie that holds suspense, comedy, and deep emotions. The boys in the film, including River Phoenix and Corey Feldman, search for a teenagers missing body. This film is a coming of age story about some boys who experience the growing pains of life. The friendship carried by the boys is one of true trust and love. This film is very relatable and will have you rethinking what your childhood means to you. The true bond these friends have will remind you of what friendship really means.

#1 Shawshank Redemption – The second movie in this list based on a novel by Stephen King (the other being Stand By Me), this film is about the triumph of the human mind and spirit. Shawshank Redemption Stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as they do time in the Shawshank prison for crimes they may or may not have done. Tim Robbins plays the character Andy Dufrense as he copes with being stuck for life in a prison for a crime he didn't comment. This quiet film shows the true depths of the human mind and how far one will go to achieve what is right.

movie

When it comes to businesses and activities that never existed before, there's one whole category of periodicals that did not exist just over 100 years ago.

Movie magazines started appearing around 1905-1906, focusing on the Dream Factory. Not that movies had been ignored. Earlier magazines, including theatrical as well as general interest magazines, published articles about the emerging film industry as far back as 1895, but they viewed it as a kind novelty, the way computers were describved in magazine articles in the 1960's about how computers would run your home.

Once the movie industry took off things started to get serious. There was money to be made in publishing and readers ready to buy.

Trailing the trade journals that were beginning to appear were a number of consumer-oriented titles that appealed directly to fans. Between 1909 and 1911 these fan magazines were introduced, some of which would thrive for years, such as Photoplay, Motion Picture Story (which would become Motion Picture Magazine), and Picture Play Magazine.

Studios resisted fans' demands that they release the names of their stars until 1910 and the first fan clubs began appearing about that time. The very first was organized by a friend of mine, Chaw Mank, set up 1910 for three actresses popular in the day, one of whom was Violet Merseau. (Chaw would continue organizing fan clubs until his death in 1985.) The Hollywood star system was slowly coalescing.

The industry grew, publishing responded. Photoplay World began publishing in 1917 and Photoplay Journal in 1916.

The movie magazines evolved as they aged. More titles arrived…Movie Guide in 1931, Silver Screen in 1930, Movie Story in 1924, Movie Mirror in 1928, and the best of the silent movie era, Screenland in 1924. Screenland targeted fans with 80-100 pages per issue, packed with 7-9 full-page photos of individual stars and would-be stars intended for the scrapbook.

About 60 titles appealing to movie fans would show up at newsstands between 1911 to 1938. Across the world, other movie fan magazines were capitalizing on the demand.

Profiles mixed fact and fantasy about the Hollywood stars. Gossip columnists of the 1930s contributed to the evolution of the magazine contents, as well.

Collectors will find the movie magazines of the 1920's the most sought-after due to their relative rarity.

Magazines tended towards a cover price of 15 cents, which rose to 25 cents in the 1930s. The movie magazines peaked in readership in the 1930s with some titles having 1,000,000 subscribers. Magazines of that era were filled with star photos with 60-100 per issue, on good paper and with good color quality.

There were two popular magazine formats.

One was like Movie Story, a photo novelization of current movies, a style that peaked 1933-1948. The other was more of a “newsy” type with photos, news, trivia, and behind-the-scenes stories.

Modern Screen Magazine was one of those magazines that combined both styles in a format that ran over 200 pages and included 100 star photos along with movie novelizations. Even with increasing production costs, and World War Two's shortages, Modern Screen was able to maintain its standards throughout. That was despite the competition being forced to cut back on the size and number of pages as well as relying on poorer quality paper.

During this period, Screenplay Secrets made a negative into a positive, by printing reach issue in different color inks.

Cover art also saw a decline in the 1940's due to production costs from the high-quality two-color printing in soft pastels of the 1930's.

More changes drove the evolving market in the 1950's. Movie magazines began switching their focus to scandal, which included publishing frequently-contrived stories about the stars. Television stars and rock stars started making their way into the movie magazine during that era, their share growing as their respective medium grew.

The old-style magazines ultimately disappeared due to a decreasing number of films being produced, the end of the studio star system, and competition from general interest celebrity magazines like People and it's clones.

Movie News

Raise your hand if you've been to the movies recently and have been continually irritated by the kid behind you banging away on the back of your chair?  Or what about the guy who keeps on talking throughout the movie and gives away key plots?  Or how about this – the guy who slurps and chomps on his food making the churning sounds of his popcorn compete for the musical score of the movie?  Everyone reading this article better be raising your hand!  I know I've been completely annoyed with recent trips to my local movie theaters.  I've given up going to the movies in the evening.  I think I've been irritated one too many times with the constant crying of kids in movie theaters, cell phones constantly going off and people talking throughout the entire movie.

My fiancé and I have resorted to visiting the movie theaters during the daytime but this only solves half our problems because these irritating movie ruiners are EVERYWHERE!  Based on my experiences at the movie theaters, there are the types of people I have run into and try my best to absolutely steer clear of them at all costs.  I am absolutely certain the majority of you will agree.

Guy that laughs at everything.  I know, I know.  Is this guy that annoying?  YES!  He is!  Sure when I'm in the theater watching a comedy, I understand you laugh at stuff because, well, it's a comedy.  But when you laugh at every single thing that a character on screen is doing, it gets to be irritating and you find yourself counting down the seconds between each ridculous outburst of school girl laughter he may have.  I recently was visited by this guy when I went to see Little Miss Sunshine.  Great movie.  Very funny.  But when the entire theater is absolutely quiet because they're transfixed on a scene that has nothing to do with being funny and Guy-that-laughs-at-everything spews out a belly of laughter?  You can't tell me you wouldn't be irritated.  I think this is the part where the ice cubes from my soda should collide with his head.  Does anyone else concur?

Kid kicking chair.  Ah, yes.  The innocent wide-eyed child sitting behind you playing with his little action figures or whatever the hell else these technology savvy kids play with nowadays.  You find your plesantly comfortable in your chair and settle in to watch the previews.  Everything's fine and you're well into the movie now.  But then…it starts.  You start feeling a weird bumping sensation against your mid to lower back.  Thump.  Thump.  Thump.  A bit irritated, you turn around and see that it's just a child accidentally bumping his short little legs against your chair.  You tightly smile but give a look saying, Stop it, kid.  It stops, thank God, but not for long.  Thump.  Thump.  Thump.  You turn around completely this time because now you've missed one of the most important scenes in the movie because this child finds it amusing to watch your head move back and forth against your chair.  That's right.  This is the annoying kid who loves kicking your chair.  I'd have to say I've experienced one too many of these.  The worst is when it's an adult somehow finding a way to thump your chair continually throughout a movie.  To all you chair thumpers, why don't you wear a sign so we call know to steer clear of you when picking a seat in the theater.

Person who gets out of seat every .5 seconds.  Yeah, so .5 seconds is a bit of a stretch but you can't tell me that when you see this person getting up that it doesn't feel like everything few seconds?  Either they need to go to the bathroom or they're buying a snack or they've got a phone call.  It's always something.  Somehow, they've manage to pick a seat that's in the middle of the aisle.  So, not only are they bothering you by asking you to move your legs every few seconds, they're also blocking the view of the movie screen, making you miss what's happening.  Yeah, I haven't run into this person in a while but just because they're dormant for now.  I guess it's not overactive bladder season, yet.

People talking on cell phones.  Okay.  This is kind of a two-parter.  First of all, in order for someone to be on their cell phone, it must have to ring.  Now, this means they did not turn their phone off.  So, let's go through this all in one motion.  Cell phone rings – Strike 1.  Why isn't it on silent or vibrate?  Guy picks up the call – Strike 2.  Why would you take a call in the middle of a movie?  Guy starts talking in a normal voice on the cell phone – Strike 3.  This has actually happened to me.  I understand that in our day and age where cell phones have become this weird abnormality growing out of the sides our heads is hard to get away from.  I'm not saying to leave them at home or anything like that – but there's a reason why your phone is equipped with a silent and vibrate feature!  Put them to use!  What's that?  You say you have an emergency and need to take calls as soon as you get them?  Well, you know what?  YOU SHOULDN'T BE AT THE MOVIES!  Come on, people – think a little!

People talking during movie.  This can go hand in hand with the people that talk on their cell phones during the movie.  I understand you may want to say a little something to your friend sitting next to you about how awesome a scene was or how you can't believe that guy was the killer but let's keep it at a hush hush whisper.  There's no need for me to know word for word what you've said from 5 rows away.  These types of people can be a triple threat because they possess the capability of talking in a normal voice to their neighbor during the movie.  They're also the same people who usually yell things out at the screen or give plot twists away and they absolutely looooove to narrate a movie.  From time to time, they are the person who actually talks to the screen during the movie.  Now, I've been to the movies where there are some people who say funny things once in a while because the scene just calls for it.  But there's no reason to go overboard with it and there definitely is no appreciation for someone who gives movie endings away.  These people shouldn't even be allowed to watch movies in public.

Guy that sits right next to you in empty theater.  Although this is a pet peeve of mine, fiancé is a magnet for these kinds of people.  I understand when the movie theater is full and there's no other way to sit except like a bunch of sardines in a can – but when the movie theater is pretty much empty, why, oh why, would you sit right next to me?  There are at least 100 other chairs to choose from.  What is so special about the one right next to me?  These people are usually some combination of the other annoying movie people which makes it so much worse.  Yeah…I hate this guy.

Guy eating and slurping food like a dog.  This may sound trivial and perhaps a bit anal but I have the biggest pet peeve when it comes to eating habits.  I absolutely cannot stand the sound of people chewing their food when their mouth is open.  It's disgusting!  I don't need to hear you begin the digesting process AT ALL, let alone in the movie theater.  This is the same guy that will take 30 minutes attempting to open a bag of sour patch kids as noisily as possible.  The worst part is when his soda runs out and he begins to try and suck out every last drop of sugary water out.  I mean, I'm all about getting your money's worth but this is just out of control!  This guy could quite possibly be the most annoying of them all.

I'm not trying to figure out a way to rid these people because they will ALWAYS be around.  I just want everyone else to be made aware of these people as well.  And at some point, justice will be served and they will realize they are no longer welcome in the confines of a dark room and big movie screen full of 200 people.  Perhaps…but that day has not yet come.  Until then, I have associated content to vent my frustration to.

Hockey Season is just around the corner and the Carolina Hurricanes will soon start defending their Stanley Cup Championship. Whoever thought you would ever hear those words in the same sentence. It’s kind of like “And the Award for Best Actor goes to Steve Seagal.” But I digress. Well, anyway with Hockey season just around the corner here is a list of the top five hockey movies of all time. I wanted to do a top ten list, but couldn’t find ten hockey movies. That being said some of these movies are not that great but they are about hockey so they made the list. So here goes the top five hockey movies of all time.

Slap Shot (1977) This is by far the greatest hockey movie ever made. Paul Newman plays Reggie Dunlap the aging player-coach of a third rate minor league hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs. Dunlap is the type of player that is not above using a dirty trick or two to motivate his players or psych out the opposition. When word spreads that the local steel mill will be closing down, Chiefs ownership decides to sell the team after the season. In the meantime ownership brings in the Hanson Brothers, three brothers known more for fighting then playing hockey. When Dunlap sees the crowd embrace the Hansons, he decides to turn it up a notch in hopes of filling the arena and getting his team to start winning. The scenes with the Hanson Brothers are some of the funniest you will ever see. Plus it is worth looking at just to see the 70’s fashions being worn. Paul Newman in a brown leather suit is classic.

In 2002 a sequel was made starring Stephen Baldwin, I haven’t scene it and from what I hear it is not worth the effort.

Miracle (2004) This is the true story of the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey team. This team of young college kids shocked the world by beating the mighty Soviet Union on the way to winning the gold medal. Kurt Russell plays head coach Herb Brooks, the man who brought them all together and taught them how to play as a team. This movie starts from the beginning and shows the development of the team and how they were able to work past all their differences as they work toward their ultimate goal. This movie will send a chill down the spine of anyone who remembers watching this all unfold. Remember this was the height of the cold war and this team gave a new sense of hope to a country that so desperately needed it. The actually hockey scenes in this movie are some of the best you will ever see.

Mighty Ducks (1992) This family movie can best be described as Bad News Bears on ice. Emilio Estevez plays a man sentenced to coach a team of “not so talented” kids who he eventually molds into a cohesive unit. Pretty standard stuff with a predictable ending, but this is still a great family movie suitable for all ages. This movie has two sequels D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) and D3: The Might Ducks (1996)

Mystery, Alaska (199) This movie takes place in small Alaskan town whose biggest social event is the Saturday hockey game, where only the best players in town are asked to play. When a former resident of Mystery writes an article for Sports Illustrated about the game, the NHL decides to send the New York Rangers to Mystery to play a game as a promotional stunt. This turns the whole town upside down as they prepare for the game. Russell Crowe (yes that Russell Crowe) plays the town’s sheriff and aging hockey star and Burt Reynolds, plays the towns judge who serves as the town’s conscience. This is a good movie, not great, about life in a small town.

Youngblood (1986) Rob Lowe plays Dean Youngblood a talented hockey player who goes to Canada to play on a junior team in the hopes of catching the eye of NHL scouts. Along the way he butts heads with the coach, learns he must be tougher and falls for the coach’s daughter. You can probably guess the ending. Also stars Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves.

So there you have it the top hockey movies of all time.
